Theological Dictionaries and Encyclopedias

These encyclopedias and dictionaries are some of the general reference tools for theological research. They provide general information, comprehensive surveys of specific topics and bibliographies for additional reading.

The first section includes dictionaries and encyclopedias which discuss the terms and general subjects in theology. While this bibliography emphasizes works which reflect Catholic theology, standard reference books representing the Protestant viewpoint have been included.

The second section lists several major encyclopedias or dictionaries of special disciplines in theology such as moral theology, liturgy or church history.

The following are journals and serial publications which contain documents, speeches and teachings of the church. They are indexed in the Catholic Periodical and Literature Index. They are housed in the library's journal collection.

Acta Apostolicae Sedis Commentarius Officiale. 1909-
Contains documents and speeches of the popes, acts and decisions of congregations and curial bodies and decrees of recent councils in their official versions. The language is Latin or the language in which the speech was given. An index is provided.

Act Sanctae Sedis 1865-1908 Preceded Acta Apostolicae Sedis.

Catholic International. 1990-
The new English language edition of "Documentation Catholique" began publication October, 1990. A semi-monthly publication dedicated to presenting key church texts from Rome, Bishops' Conferences, and churches throughout the world. In 1993, frequency changed to monthly.

L'Osservatore Romano
Contains almost all papal documents and speeches as well as church documents from all over the world. It also reprints curial documents. Issues from 1968-82 and 1990-2000 are available through the library’s network of databases. Older issues are on microfilm in basement of Theology Library.

Origins, National Catholic Documentary Service
Reprints ecclesiastical documents of the United States, as well as papal and other Roman documents. This weekly, loose-leaf publication includes quarterly author and subject indexes which are annually cumulated.

The Pope Speaks. The Church Documents Quarterly. 1954-
Contains selected papal documents in English. There is a continuing bibliography of all papal documents for the preceding quarter. It is called the T.P.S. log and is arranged chronologically by date of publication and gives reference to the original text and translations. Annual indexes are included.

The "Elenchus Bibliographicus" is issued annually as part of the journal and is the most extensive bibliography of theology. It is especially useful for its coverage of systematic theology. Books, festschriften, conference proceedings and dissertations as well as 500 theological journals are indexed. Entries are arranged in a classified subject system and an author index is provided.
